Picture lights

I call them picture lights, but the fancier term; gallery lights, also works.

I started experimenting with them a few years ago. I bought some rechargeable LED picture lights off Amazon and installed three of them around the house. As with most rechargeable lights, I liked the function they served, but hated the chore of recharging them.

Then about six months ago I found some Arhaus picture lights that could be plugged in, OR hard-wired. This was great, I could easily plug them in until time to hard wire (spoiler, I never plugged them in, just skipped to hard wiring)

Last week my contractor hard wired three different picture lights for me, one uses a switch, the other two have on/off switches on the light fixture itself.

Honestly I find it’s SO MUCH EASIER if the picture light has its own on/off switch. Then you can put them wherever. If it requires a light switch you have to be much more mindful about where you install them.

Finally, I also installed this plug in option in my basement. I hated the wire hanging down so I ended up also using a conduit from Amazon. The conduit is paintable, but I picked a black one which I think doesn’t look bad for the time being.

Resources

A general rule is to make sure your picture light is at least 1/3 the length of your art.

Also when possible, hang anywhere from 3-6” above the art.
