Home Decorating Tips I live by

Writer's picture: Ashley DillonAshley Dillon

It’s been awhile since I posted, and for that I apologize. Life got crazy with the start of school, after school sports, and the busy season beginning at my day job. But I did want to get a new series started, and I thought no better time than the present!

I don’t pretend to be some Master of Interior Design. I know some stuff, but there’s A LOT that I don’t know. I haven’t studied color theory, I don’t know code on where outlets can and cannot be placed, and I would definitely struggle designing outdoor landscaping.

But what I do know is to trust my gut, follow my instinct, and stick with a few basic rules when it comes to decorating my own home. I’m sharing those rules with you over the next few blog posts. Let’s get started!

  1. Paint is magic.

If your space hasn’t been painted in the last 5 years, it may be time to take a look at what color your walls are, and if they are doing your rooms any justice.

Sometimes we pick a color because it looked good on the swatch, we were in a hurry, we saw it on HGTV and “it looked good there so I’m sure it will look good in my home!”

There are all terrible reason to choose a paint color. The colors in your home are so important, I daresay they are even more important than furniture. I recommend studying home design images that you’re drawn to, and figuring out what colors you like, and why. Then determine which rooms will look best with the colors you choose.

For example, I LOVE a dark and moody space. I’ve always been drawn to color (much more than to neutrals) and when a moody room is done right, there’s nothing better (in my humble opinion). But I have a lot of friends that want their entire house painted various shades of white, and they couldn’t dream of having a dark bedroom. To each their own! What’s most important is to figure out what YOU like, and go for it!

Don’t be afraid to take chances, especially when it comes to paint. Changing up your paint is one of the most impactful, but least costly ways to make a big change and impact on your home. It does take some effort, especially if you are painting all by yourself, but once it’s done, you’ll be amazed how much fresher your home will feel.

Here are some of my go to paint colors:
