Last week in my Instagram stories I asked if my followers would like to see a blog post on my opinion of what's in and what's out for 2022. 100% of respondents said "YES! We want to know!" So here goes:
IN - Traditional
Classic millwork, stained wood, floral, toile, and striped wallpaper, dark hardwood floors, cane furniture, shall I go on? If you missed the memo, the 90s are back! And I'm not just talking flared jeans and Juicy Couture. Traditional design elements are back in a big way. One image that comes to mind is Ralph Lauren interior design. Beautiful stained oak built-ins with plaid wallpaper and rich deep colors. These are going to start to trend more and more.
IN - Green
Y'all know I love green already. My three major living spaces in my house are painted Sherwin Williams various shades of green: Shade Grown, Eclipse, and Thunderous. The 2022 color of the year is Evergreen Fog; a lovely sage green. Design has always been about connecting with nature, and now it's definitely taking a big step back in this direction.
IN - Antiques
The pandemic had a lot of consequences that we didn't necessarily anticipate. One big one is the delays associated with ordering anything nowadays. If you want a new sofa, be prepared to wait 6+ months. Because of this, I think there's going to be a big shift to start decorating with antiques and secondhand furniture. I've already been buying second hand furniture for years, but I expect it to become an even hotter market for re-sellers. Just today I saw this beautiful antique sideboard for $50 that I would definitely use if I had the space. One of the best things about using antiques? Your space is guaranteed to be one of a kind!
IN - Defined intimate spaces
With everyone working from home, and occasionally schooling from home, I think open floor plans not going to be what designers will covet in 2022. That's not to say the masses wont still clamor for a house that has wide open spaces, I just think over the course of the next few years, when people start renovating their homes, they'll be leaving walls up, instead of tearing them down.
Moving On
Okay, now onto the nitty gritty. I'm not going to go into too much detail, but here's what I think is on it's way out:
Modern Farmhouse - If you look at Joanna Gaines latest designs, even she has moved past her signature look from the early/mid 2010s. All white interiors with word signs, big black accents, massive clocks, and barn doors have already began to decline.
Two Tone Kitchens - I’m referring to painted cabinets with different colors for uppers and lowers. When executed correctly, it can still be striking. But a lot of times it's not done right and would just look better all one color. I still love a contrasting island though.
Geometric Accent Walls - You know those accent walls that have wooden slats going this way, that way and making triangle like shapes on the wall that everyone DIYed that last few years? Yeah, I'm over those. I'm sorry!
Let me know your thoughts in the comments. What's on your list of what's in and out?
